Free Webinar Offers Albertans Tools to Protect Family Photos During Emergency Preparedness Week
Edmonton, Alberta – In recognition of Emergency Preparedness Week (May 4–10, 2025), Certified Photo Manager Carmen Carvajal will host a free 90-minute webinar on May 8 to help Albertans safeguard their most cherished family memories—photos, documents, and keepsakes—from disasters like fires, floods, and data loss.
With shifting weather patterns contributing to an increase in sudden and severe natural events such as the recent wildfires in Jasper and Fort McMurray, protecting irreplaceable memories has never been more urgent. While photos are often among the first things people want to save during an emergency, they can only be rescued if they’ve been organized ahead of time.
“Photos are among our most treasured life records,” says Carmen Carvajal. “And yet many people delay organizing them, them because they don’t have the time, don’t know where to start, or simply don’t realize how much is at stake until it’s too late.”
The theme of this year’s national campaign, “Be Prepared. Know Your Risks,” underscores the importance of proactive planning. Carvajal’s webinar will complement these efforts by offering practical, guidance for protecting both physical and digital photo collections from the unexpected.
“Whether you live in a wildfire zone or a city center, having a plan for your family’s visual history is essential,” Carvajal explains. “Without proper safeguards in place, you risk losing more than images. You risk losing a part of your identity and family legacy.”
This free educational session is part of Carvajal’s ongoing mission to make photo preservation accessible to families across Alberta’s urban and rural communities. Through her photo organizing services and guided autobiography program, she helps clients preserve their family history.
