Noel Edey, Publisher of the Mountaineer has provided further information on the memorial service for Robin Edey….

Robin Edey, 54, the longest serving member of the Mountaineer staff, passed away on Sept. 6 after battling ongoing health problems.

In her time with the Mountaineer, Robin saw great change in the newspaper industry. Upon graduating with honors from Henry Street High in Whitby, ON, she moved to Grande Cache in July 1976 to join her father’s staff, initially as a typesetter. She became a master of the finicky Singer Friden Justowriter, a typesetting system that saw her type code on to computer tape that she fed to an adjoining machine. That evolved into operating a Compugraphic phototypesetting unit she often insisted was filled lemon juice. It was eventually eliminated by desktop publishing but by that time, Robin had gone on to fill other roles at the newspaper.

Being part of the staff of a small town paper, Robin was called upon to multitask, juggling many roles at one time. She was involved with sales, accounts, administration, circulation and generally keeping her brother and staff in line.

Robin enjoyed greeting people to the Mountaineer office and took great pleasure in friendly chats and humor. Her love for music and singing were well known by staff members as she’d played her favorite songs loudly in her office. She often drowned it out as she sang along, often clapping in time. We knew all was well in the world when Robin was singing.

For her years of service in the industry, Robin was awarded the prestigious Alberta Weekly Newspaper Association’s Silver Quill award in 2004. She was part of a team that has accumulated over 135 national and provincial newspaper awards of excellence. While Robin worked in the background she was an important part of this success.

Outside of her work at the newspaper, her community involvements over the years included Lions Clubs International, including a term as president, Grande Cache Chamber of Commerce, Grande Cache Palette Pals and Big Horn Golden Age Club.

With over 33 years of service, Robin retired as Mountaineer general manager last October and moved to Cochrane, AB. where she lived at the Bethany Care Centre.

A memorial service for Robin was held Sept. 14 at the Grande Cache United Church.
