AWNA to withdraw from AdWest
The AWNA has decided that it will leave AdWest at the end of this year. Notice has been provided to the AdWest Board of Directors and staff has been informed about the decision.
President Fred Gorman made the following statement:
“The AWNA Board is committed to building a sustainable business model that will be viable three to five years from now. It believes the association will be able to deliver its services to members in a more effective and sustainable way by providing these services on its own.”
It will be business as usual for the next nine months as the association prepares to provide sales and marketing services to members starting in 2015.
It’s unfortunate that AWNA is pulling out of AdWest. The partners of AdWest have worked hard to establish one of, if not the leading, marketing and research organizations for the print community newspaper industry in Canada. The AdWest directors, at their board meeting in December, 2013, directed President Gorman and the executive to examine the restructuring of AdWest that would enable AdWest to sustain itself and become financially independent. The committee met this past January for discussions with a brief outline of a proposal developed by President Fred Gorman, which has not yet been presented to the AdWest board of directors. I personally was looking forward of the report at our AdWest board meeting this April 25th.
It’s unfortunate that the AWNA board made their decision before the restructuring presentation. The AdWest concept was designed to market all members’ papers with the best research and data that could be provided. With seed monies from the associations to establish the roots of the organization we were now at a stage to having it being self-sustaining. We’ve all experienced downward trends within the “national” advertising, in Saskatchewan we know that those numbers were primarily from the auto, provincial government and almost nil from the federal government. The offsetting gain was from the “retail” side, and it showed that it primarily was from the work of AdWest.
Respectfully,
Clark Pepper, Sask. AdWest Director
