Alberta Volunteer Citizen selected for 2013 

Program to award $10,000 to volunteerism across Alberta

Sister Eileen Boyle of Westlock named 2013 Alberta Volunteer Citizen of the Year

Direct Energy and the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association (AWNA) are
pleased to announce that the winner of this year’s Volunteer Citizen of
the Year Award is Sister Eileen Boyle of Westlock, Alberta.  Sister
Eileen will receive a $1,000 cash award from Direct Energy and Direct
Energy will make a donation of $5,000 to the Westlock and District Food
Bank Association, a charity chosen by Sister Eileen, in her name.

“Sister Eileen’s commitment to her causes through her volunteer
work is extraordinary, from the countless hours she spends at the
Westlock and District Food Bank to her involvement at the local
hospital, she is the model volunteer citizen,” said Tanis Kozak,
Vice-President and General Manager, Direct Energy Canada. “Her ongoing
dedication makes her a true example of what “giving back to the
community where you work and live” means and Direct Energy is proud to
honour her with this award.”

Direct
Energy and the Alberta Weekly Newspapers Association are proud to also
recognize these four finalists for the outstanding work they’ve done in
their communities, and the organization they have chosen to receive
their $1,000 award:

  • Joyce Johnston of Millet – Millet and District Historical Society
  • Rita Krawiec of Swan Hills – Swan Hills Community Club
  • Sylvia Krikun of Mayerthorpe – Fallen Four Memorial Society
  • Ken Westwater of Hythe – Hythe Volunteer Fire Department

The Volunteer Citizen of the Year Award is an extension of
an existing Direct Energy program that encourages company employees to
volunteer their time and energy to a cause or an organization in their
local community.
The award itself consists of:

  • $1,000 cash prize to the winner;
  • $5,000 cash grant to the winner’s organization/cause of choice in their respective community;
  • recognition of the winner’s achievement through a
    commemorative award, article and photo to be published in AWNA
    newspapers across Alberta;
  • $1,000 cash grant to four semi-finalists’ organization/cause of choice in their respective communities; and
  • special recognition of the four semi-finalists.
