Alberta funds groundbreaking drug for rare disease
Alberta’s government now covers Sotatercept, giving patients living with pulmonary arterial hypertension access to life-changing treatment at no cost.
Funded through Alberta’s Specialized High Cost Drug Program, Sotatercept is the first treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension that targets the cause of the disease, not just the symptoms. For many patients, this could mean greater independence and more time doing the things they enjoy with family and loved ones.
Pulmonary arterial hypertension is a rare but devastating condition that causes high blood pressure in the lungs. Over time, it places stress on the right side of the heart and can lead to heart failure. It is progressive, disabling and life-threatening with no cure.
“Pulmonary arterial hypertension is a serious and disabling disease that can dramatically affect a person’s quality of life and place significant strain on families and caregivers. This new coverage gives Albertans living with this condition access to a groundbreaking treatment that offers hope, improved quality of life and the opportunity to spend more time doing things they love. It’s a meaningful step forward for everyone touched by this disease.”Justin Wright, Minister of Primary and Preventative Health Services
“As both a pulmonary hypertension physician in Alberta and a board director at the Pulmonary Hypertension Association of Canada, I am incredibly happy and thankful that Sotatercept is now available to Albertans. We have seen the immense benefits of this medication. It is our hope that many patients will have significant and sustained improvements in their disease and quality of life and ability to participate more fully in everyday activities. This is an exciting and hope-inspiring time for patients and families who have already overcome so much with this illness.”Dr. Mitesh Thakrar, physician, Peter Lougheed Center, and board director, Pulmonary Hypertension Association Canada
Also known as Winrevair, Sotatercept is the first drug for pulmonary arterial function that targets the biological pathway involved in how the disease develops. Clinical evidence shows that it can improve exercise capability and heart and lung function while slowing progression.
Sotatercept was approved for use by Health Canada and negotiated through the pan-Canadian Pharmaceutical Alliance. Eligible Albertans will now have access to the drug in combination with other therapies that are currently in use to manage pulmonary arterial hypertension.
