Minister of Advanced Education Myles McDougall and Minister of Arts, Culture and Status of Women Tanya Fir issued the following statements on Consent Awareness Week:

“This week, Alberta recognizes the third annual Consent Awareness Week, which brings attention to the importance of respectful and consensual interactions, which are key to reducing instances of gender-based violence.

“As students return to the classroom this month, this week also highlights the ongoing responsibility to create environments where everyone feels safe, and boundaries are respected. Our government continues to work closely with post-secondary institutions and student organizations to make campuses safer, strengthen sexual violence prevention and continue to increase education and awareness about the importance of consent.

“It is up to all of us to end sexual- and gender-based violence.”
– Myles McDougall, Minister of Advanced Education

“Through Building on Our Strengths: Alberta’s 10-Year Strategy to End Gender-Based Violence, our government is leading with action. We are raising awareness, working to prevent violence before it begins, supporting Indigenous-led solutions, empowering women to be economically independent and ensuring survivors have the supports they need to heal.

“By fostering a culture of consent and respect, we can break the cycle of violence and give every Albertan the chance to live safely, without fear.”
– Tanya Fir, Minister of Arts, Culture and Status of Women
