Statement: Emergency Preparedness Week: Minister Ellis
Emergency Preparedness Week: Minister Ellis
Public Safety and Emergency Services Minister Mike Ellis issued the following statement on Emergency Preparedness Week and the upcoming Alberta Emergency Alert test:
“Emergency Preparedness Week runs from May 3 to 9 and provides an opportunity for all Albertans to reflect on the steps we can take to prepare for emergencies before, during and after they happen. This year’s theme, In It Together, highlights the important role community connections play in preparedness and recovery.
“Albertans know emergencies like wildfires, floods, severe weather, power outages and other disruptions can happen with little or no warning. Being prepared in advance can reduce stress and save lives.
“Through an annual survey, we have learned that 44 per cent of respondents say they feel unprepared for disasters, and only 12 per cent report having a community support system in place. These insights reinforce the importance of taking steps now to prepare and strengthen connections with others before they are needed.
“Emergency preparedness is a shared responsibility. While local and provincial governments work to prepare for and respond to emergencies, individuals, households, organizations and communities all have a role to play. Preparedness is not something we do alone; it is strengthened by working together. Connections across work, culture, faith, teams and shared networks help strengthen resilience by supporting awareness and mutual support.
“Here are some steps we can all follow:
- Identify your communities. Consider the connections and groups in your daily life.
- Start the conversation. Talk about risks and preparedness in everyday situations.
- Share information and resources. Be aware of the supports in your area.
- Check in. Stay connected with others, especially those who may need extra support.
“In addition to making community connections, Albertans can strengthen their personal preparedness by getting and staying informed, knowing their risks, preparing emergency supplies and making a plan. Albertans can visit alberta.ca/BePrepared for more information and resources to help.
“As part of Emergency Preparedness Week, the Government of Alberta will test the Alberta Emergency Alert system across all platforms on Wednesday, May 6 at 1:55 p.m. Albertans will receive a test alert on their phones and other devices. We know the test may interrupt what people are doing, but this is essential to ensure the system is working properly.
“I encourage Albertans to download the Alberta Emergency Alert app. Alberta issues emergency alerts and AMBER Alerts to provide critical information about immediate disasters or situations, where they are occurring and, most importantly, what actions people can take to stay safe.
“By taking steps today, we can build safer, more resilient communities across the province.”
