With over 100 concrete initiatives, Alberta’s 10-year Strategy to End Gender-Based Violence takes action to prevent violence and protect families across the province.

Alberta’s government remains dedicated to addressing all forms of gender-based violence and strengthening supports for survivors through year-round programs and services that help Albertans live safely and free from harm.

This targeted work is supported by an annual investment of more than $188 million and this year, efforts were marked by the launch of Building on Our Strengths: Alberta’s 10-Year Strategy to End Gender-Based Violence, the most comprehensive plan of its kind in Canada.

“Gender-based violence impacts everyone and it will take all of us working together to end it. By working across ministries and with community partners and survivors, we are strengthening prevention efforts and ensuring support is available, when and where Albertans need it most.”

Tanya Fir, Minister of Arts, Culture and Status of Women

Alberta is advancing this strategy through cross-government investments in crisis response, increased awareness, housing supports, Indigenous-led programming, culturally appropriate care, family and sexual violence services, and supports for rural and remote communities.

As this work continues, the province is ensuring that help is always available for those in need.

“Over the holidays, it is especially important to promote healthy, respectful relationships, and to check the well-being of those we care about. If you or someone you know is experiencing violence, please know that you are not alone. Supports, resources and help are available.”

Searle Turton, Minister of Children and Family Services

Supports include calling 911 if you or someone close to you is in immediate danger; and calling or texting 211 to connect with confidential counselling, support centres and shelters. Albertans can also call or text the Family Violence Info Line at 310-1818, or access confidential support through the Safety Chat at alberta.ca/SafetyChat. Additionally, Indigenous Peoples across Canada can access the Hope for Wellness Helpline for immediate counselling and crisis intervention by calling 1-855-242-3310, which provides supports in the most respectful and culturally appropriate ways possible.
