Alberta’s government is investing in creative industries to ensure the province remains a premier destination for film and television.
In 2023, Alberta’s cultural film and television sector contributed $1.25 billion to our economy and supported more than 9,000 jobs across the province. To build on this momentum, Alberta’s government is making strategic investments into the Alberta Media Fund to ensure the province’s creative and cultural industries thrive.
Over the last year, the province’s $8-million investment has showcased Alberta talent and creativity, with $5.4 million dedicated to the Alberta Made Screen Industries Program to strengthen the full production pipeline. By supporting filmmakers, studios and smaller-budget projects that help train emerging talent, Alberta’s position as a top-tier film and TV destination continues to grow.
“Investing in the Alberta Media Fund helps keep every stage of production close to home, from concept to final cut. By supporting Alberta talent, infrastructure and creative industries, we are ensuring Alberta’s film and TV industry remains competitive and that good jobs stay in our communities.”
Tanya Fir, Minister of Arts, Culture and Status of Women
The Alberta Made Screen Industries Program delivers support through three targeted grant streams:
- Alberta Made Production Grant
- Post-Production, Visual Effects and Digital Animation Grant
- Project/Script Development Grant
Together, these grants help projects move from early development through to final production, ensuring film and television work can be created and completed in Alberta.
In 2025, 58 projects received more than $1 million through the Project/Script Development Grant, helping Alberta creators advance new ideas and compete on the international stage. At the same time, 34 post-production companies received a combined total of more than $520,000 through the Post-Production, Visual Effects and Digital Animation Grant. As a program unique to Canada, this grant stream is designed to keep every stage of the film and television production cycle in Alberta.
“The Post-Production Grant has been an integral part of Alberta’s post-production sector and our company’s growth since its inception. As a local business, the PPG has enabled us to hire emerging talent and build the necessary infrastructure to handle larger-scale television and film projects.”
Dan McManus, voice director/music supervisor, Six Degrees Music & Sound
“Provincial investment in programs like the Project/Script Development Grant allows Alberta companies to create new projects that compete internationally; showcasing Alberta ideas and talent, attracting foreign dollars to locally owned productions and generating significant provincial return on investment. That’s a hugely positive industrial cycle.”
Tom Cox, executive producer and managing partner, Seven24 Films
Every dollar of government support towards film and television production generates four dollars of investment back into the province. By investing in creative industries, Alberta’s government is delivering strong returns for Albertans and supporting economic growth across the province.
