The Alberta Press Council has called a meeting of its members, to take place on December 14th, to discuss its future in light of the resignation of the Calgary Herald.  The Edmonton Journal pulled out of the press council earlier this year.

Postmedia Network, which owns the Herald and the Journal, has indicated that it no longer wishes to support a regional press council.  Herald publisher Guy Huntingford has said he would support a national press council.

An AWNA board meeting will be held on December 12th to discuss the association’s commitment to the Council, both short and long-term.

The Red Deer Advocate and AWNA had earlier made commitments to provide funding to the Council for 2013.
